As part of our kitchen remodeling project in 2005, we were given sample pieces of blue pearl granite, used for the island and counter tops.  A customized trivet from a 12-inch square piece turned into a Christmas present for my wife.  I glued the granite to a luan plywood base and edged it with mitered molding.  To match the chairs and cabinets, the molding was stained in light oak and finished with polyurethane.
